FENCES | 1987 Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award Winner
By August Wilson | Directed by Derrick Sanders

Featuring Margo Hall, Eddie Ray Jackson, Steven Anthony Jones, Carl Lumley, Adrian Roberts and Tyee Tilghman

“August Wilson at his finest!” – Boston Herald

Troy Maxson, one of the greatest characters of American theater, has stepped up to the plate too many times in his life only to go down swinging. Shut out of the big leagues by prejudice, the former Negro League homerun king is now a garbage collector just trying to make a living and do right by his family. When his youngest son shows promise on the high school football team, Troy must come to terms with his past disappointments or risk tearing his family apart.

This is Wilson’s 1950s entry into his Century Cycle – a decade-by-decade exploration of the black experience in 20th century America – from which MTC previously produced his 1940s entry, Seven Guitars, in 2011.

Features the MTC debut of director Derrick Sanders, who previously directed Fences at Virginia Stage Company, our co-producer on Matthew Lopez’s The Whipping Man, and who recently directed the world premiere of Kwame Kwei-Armah Beneatha’s Place and Bruce Norris’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Clybourne Park, which the new play was responding to, in repertory at CENTERSTAGE, the state theater of Maryland.
